Team Information

Teams in AYSO are formed solely on the basis of the player's age and last year's ratings (where available).  Each division is managed by a Division Coordinator who can be reached through the "Contact Us" link at the top of every page.

Jamboree/U5 Division - 4 years old on July 31 (under 5)

The U5/Jamboree program is specifically designed for four year olds. Jamboree is a combination of two different formats that, put together, provides the best possible introduction to soccer for our youngest players. Jamboree is a One-with-One program where each player works with a parent (or other adult) on the field. More information on Jamboree is available here.

Division U6 - 5 years old on July 31 (under 6 division)

Under-6 soccer is a game designed especially for our youngest players.  The game is played with only four players from each team on the field at any one time.  There are no league standings, no goalkeepers, simplified field markings, and short playing periods.  The intent is to provide a team-based environment where players develop basic ball handling skills and have Fun!

  • A non-competitive division for players age 5.
  • Team size of 7 or 8 players, with 4 players from each team on the field during games.
  • Lower division games are played without a goalkeeper.
  • Every team member plays at least 1/2 of every game.
  • Games are 40 minutes long.
  • Games are officiated by Team Parent Referees.  Every team provides team parent referees.
  • Season:  10 weeks.  No post-season playoffs.

Division U8 - 6 & 7 years old on July 31 (under 8 division)

Under-8 soccer is a game designed especially for our younger players.  The game is played with six players from each team on the field at any one time.  There are no league standings, no goalkeepers, simplified field markings, and short playing periods.  The intent is to provide a team-based environment where players develop basic ball handling skills and have Fun!

  • A non-competitive division for players age 6 and 7.  
  • Team size is 7 or 8 players, with 6 players from each team on the field during games.
  • Lower division games are played without a goalkeeper.
  • Every team member plays at least 3/4 of every game.
  • Games are 40 minutes long.
  • Games are officiated by Team Parent Referees.  Every team provides team parent referees.
  • Team formation:  Teams are balanced based on players age and last year's player ratings (where available).
  • Season:  10 weeks.  No post-season playoffs.

Division U10 - 8 & 9 years old on July 31 (under 10 division)

Under-10 soccer brings an element of competitive league play into the game of soccer.  This division plays on medium-sized fields with reduced-size goals where available.  The league standings are based on games played in the second half of the season with a post-season weekend tournament (weather permitting).

  • For players age 8 and 9.
  • Games played with 7 players from each team on the field during games.
  • Every team member plays at least 3/4 of every game.
  • Games are 50 minutes long.
  • Games are officiated by Regional and Area Referees.  Every team is expected to provide at least one trained Assistant Referee.
  • Practices:  Typically 1 or 2 per week.
  • Team formation:  Teams are balanced based on players age and last year's player ratings (where available).  Player "buddy" requests are not honored.
  • Season:  10 week regular season with a 2 day post-season tournament.  Tournament qualification occurs during last few regular season games.

Division U12 - 10 & 11 years old on July 31 (under 12 division)

Under-12 soccer is played under FIFA Laws modified as appropriate for youth soccer (notably: a smaller ball, reduced field size and game length).  League standings are based on the entire season with a post-season weekend tournament (weather permitting).

  • A competitive division for players age 10 and 11.  Player "buddy" requests are not honored.
  • Games played with 9 players from each team on the field during games.
  • Every team member plays at least 3/4 of every game.
  • Games are 60 minutes long.
  • Games are officiated by Regional and Area Referees.
  • Practices:  Typically 1-2 per week.
  • Team formation:  Teams are balanced based on players age and last year's player ratings (where available).  Player "buddy" requests are not honored.
  • Season:  10 week regular season with a post-season tournament.

Division U14 - 12 & 13 years old on July 31 (under 12 division)

A competitive division for players age 12 and 13.  

  • Team size is 14 or fewer players, with 11 players from each team on the field during games.  Player "buddy" requests are not honored.
  • Every team member plays at least 3/4 of every game.
  • Games are 70 minutes long.
  • Games are officiated by Regional and Area, and National Referees.
  • Practices:  Typically 2 per week.
  • Team formation:  Teams are balanced based on players age and last year's player ratings (where available).  Player "buddy" requests are not honored.
  • Season:  10 game regular season with a post-season tournament.

Division U16 - Under 16 years old on July 31

The U14 division is operated by Area 2N (Region 36 is a region in Area 2N).  Area 2N covers most of San Mateo County.

  • Competitive divisions for players age 14 and15.  
  • Game location:  various locations in San Mateo County.
  • Games are 80 minutes long.
  • Games are officiated by Regional, Area, and National Referees.
  • Practices:  Typically 2 per week.
  • Team formation:  Teams are balanced based on players age and last year's player ratings (where available).  Player "buddy" requests are not honored.
  • Season:  10 game regular season with a post-season tournament.

Division U19 - Under 19 years old on July 31

The U19 division is operated by Area 2N (Region 36 is a region in Area 2N).  Area 2N covers most of San Mateo County.

  • Competitive divisions for players age 16 through 18.  
  • Game location:  various locations in San Mateo County.
  • Games are 90 minutes long.
  • Games are officiated by Regional, Area, and National Referees.
  • Practices:  Typically 2 per week.
  • Team formation:  Teams are balanced based on players age and last year's player ratings (where available).  Player "buddy" requests are not honored.
  • Season:  10 game regular season with a post-season tournament.
